“Unleash the Power of Electric Mobility: Join the Revolution!”

Prepare to witness an electrifying revolution that will reshape the entire automotive industry! A groundbreaking UBS report has unveiled a new trend: within a mere 18 years, all cars sold globally will predominantly be fully electric. Yet, a crucial challenge remains in the way of this transformative future—the charging of electric vehicles (EVs).

Imagine yourself as an EV owner in this remarkable era. The effort of finding a fast charger station becomes a daunting task, with a mere 0.38% chance of availability amidst the current growth rate. Even in the best-case scenario, charging overnight might seem like a solution, but what if a busy day distracts you from plugging in? Picture waking up the next morning only to find yourself stranded at home without a charged vehicle.

But fear not! We have the ultimate solution that eliminates all barriers. Through our groundbreaking technology, we remove the need for human interaction and revolutionize EV charging with autonomous robotic implementation. Not only will you enjoy effortless charging, but you’ll even have the freedom to easily park on the street.

To bring this groundbreaking vision to life, we are actively seeking investors interested in our vision, also passionate software & robotic engineers interested in our technology.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this transformative journey. Together, let’s enable a future where electric mobility knows no bounds. Join us as we embark on this thrilling adventure, and thank you for considering this incredible opportunity to shape the world of tomorrow!”

TOPhealth App

Adeliya Sharafutdinova

Have you noticed that every day, the development of technology is increasingly changing the way of life we are accustomed to? Online innovations are allowing us to save the most important resource today – time!

The outbreak of COVID-19 has given a new impetus to the development of telemedicine.  Despite the fight against coronavirus infection, other patients still need the advice of medical specialists. However, the fear of getting infected is increasingly pushing people to look for alternatives, namely, there is a need to seek advice online without leaving home, and without risking their health and the health of their loved ones.

The main idea of TOPHealth is to create an application in the field of telemedicine, which will enable the population to receive the necessary and, most importantly, affordable medical care in a timely manner using all possible operating systems of the modern world, be it mobile devices, desktop or laptop computers. This application will help not only patients, but also doctors in obtaining / providing remote medical services without a physical presence in a medical institution.

The business model that I describe in my project involves two types of clients: patients who seek help from a doctor, and the doctor himself who provides services in the field of telemedicine. This applications brings about a number of benefits to both parties, namely:

  1. Time saved that was previously spent on finding a suitable clinic, on transport, waiting in line, and much more.
  2. Real possibility of social distancing, thanks to the remote way of providing services.
  3. Choice of suitable specialists through online catalogs, and analysing all the available information, reviews and recommendations before making an appointment, so patients can be confident in the effectiveness of the appointment.
  4. Physicians will be able to significantly increase the coverage of potential patients with the time saved, which in turn will have a positive effect on increasing their income.

The benefits provided by applications in the field of telemedicine are not at all limited to the points above, but analyses show that the business opportunity in this industry is promising with important growth predicted in the near future.

Today, in these difficult times, creating a new business is quite risky and problematic, but it seems to me that at the same time, the complexity of the current situation gives us the opportunity to come up with something not just new, but valuable in terms of usefulness, capable of solving problems,  that we encounter in everyday life. The chosen business model in the current market conditions has excellent prospects for which this set of strategic measures was developed to bring the business idea of TOPHealth to light.

Ghosted Mobile App

Sebastian Christensen

Introducing Ghosted, the groundbreaking application that bridges the gap between the digital and in-person world, revolutionizing the way we meet people in crowded bars, nightclubs, and cafes. In a world where technology has transformed social interactions, Ghosted offers a safe, anonymous, and enriching experience that promotes local businesses and strengthens communities.

With 67.1% of the global population owning a smartphone and 62.5% being internet users, the paradigm shift caused by the digitization of our lives has reshaped socializing and information consumption across three generations.

Ghosted challenges this trend by creating an application specifically designed for those who are out and about. Unlike existing social media and dating apps, Ghosted only functions when users are physically present at a venue such as a nightclub, cafe, or bar. The application combines the features of a social media platform and a dating app, allowing users to create multiple avatars and explore different identities for each evening out.

Ghosted provides a safe and anonymous experience for shy individuals who are seeking meaningful connections. The application ensures privacy by instantly erasing all chat conversations and personal information when a user leaves the venue. Screenshots are blocked, providing users with peace of mind that no trace of their interaction remains once they exit the establishment.

Ghosted is more than just a dating app; it’s a platform that revitalizes local communities, encourages face-to-face interactions, and creates a space for individuals to express their desired personas for an evening. Say goodbye to the limitations of traditional dating and social media applications and join the Ghosted community to discover a world where digital connections pave the way for real-life connections, with safety, anonymity, and enriched experiences at the forefront.

Romain Thys found his ambition and motivation for success while studying at UBI. Upon his graduation in 2009, he worked for a short time before pursuing a master’s degree. He didn’t want to lose his momentum in formal education. Even though he got accepted to the London School of economics (LSE), he ultimately chose CASS Business School (recently renamed Bayes Business School) for the values they espouse. While there, he studied corporate finance and distressed businesses, focusing on company management itself.

When Romain graduated from CASS Business School in 2011, the economy was already feeling the effects of the financial crisis of 2008. Because it was difficult to find a good job in London, he returned to his hometown of Charleroi, Belgium. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Luxembourg to work in risk management for an American bank.

Though to begin with he kept his day job, Romain continued to develop his business activities on the side. His first company acquisition was HTV [high tech vision] which specialises in the building and selling of giant digital displays. Unfortunately, the company had been poorly managed and found itself in bankruptcy. Romain won the bid to take over the assets of the company and he spent the next few years rebuilding the company from scratch. He always expected to sell the company but never has. While he has retained his title as CEO, he mainly focuses on development now.

Romain Thys Alumnus

Our ultimate goal is that the company is better off in 36 months than it is now.

Romain Thys

In 2017, he acquired another company, this time in the food supplements industry for muscle mass maintenance in the elderly. The company also had management problems. He spent a few years focusing on the commercial aspect of the company, all the while maintaining the intellectual property through the clinical trials. He recently sold the revitalised company

Even though Romain targets distressed companies, he chooses companies he believes in, not just companies that he can take over. While income is the end result, it is not the motivating factor. He gets satisfaction from transforming a floundering company with disgruntled employees, into a thriving company with satisfied employees. He knows that happy, well-paid employees put more effort in at work. Romain takes a very long-term approach and aims for low turnover because the key is to grow the people who work for you.

After graduating from UBI in 2017, Thibault Jacquemart worked a year before returning to get his Advanced Master in Innovation and Strategic Management at Solvay Brussels School. While there, he and a few classmates took part in a business competition called Data4Good hosted by Emergent, in which they won the Best Strategy Award. Through this experience and others, Thibault began developing his idea for a health-tech startup to specialise in patient care. His teammate, Alexandra Bendicakova, showed interest in his startup project, had experience in the health care industry, and worked so hard that she cofounded the project.

Lilo Health is their health-tech startup that specialises in building the best patient journeys. The original business idea came from researching the gaps in the healthcare industry and looking for a problem to solve. They noticed difficulties with the patient journey. For example, a patient goes to the doctor, receives a serious diagnosis, feels immediately overwhelmed, and then misses out on much of the information presented them. For the patient, the diagnosis means new rules and a new life which can be difficult to navigate. Lilo Health provides both physical and emotional support for these patients, onboarding their support team of family and friends, and giving all involved a platform to find and share information.

Several things inspired and motivated Thibault to turn his university experience into a real business plan. One was that he found the healthcare industry fascinating because it has a direct impact on people’s lives. Building a business in healthcare also provided a satisfying and intellectual challenge. The entrepreneurial experience allowed him a certain freedom and the chance to promote a product with a purpose. While the technical innovation is new, the business model is the true innovation. The test will be to make it attractive enough to interest venture capitalists.

Although the Covid pandemic did create delays, Thibault felt he couldn’t give up; his only option was to continue. The quarantine had a broader impact because it prevented him from going out with friends or family to relieve stress. Being a solo founder would have been more difficult, but working as partners allowed the two cofounders to lift each other when they got down, feeding off the positive energy of the other.

Thibault points out that starting a business isn’t easy. You usually end up working twice as much, and you have much more responsibility. While you are your own boss and can make decisions with no approval, you have to deal with the consequences. So, being your own boss has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, so make sure you learn from your mistakes.

Thibault Jacquemart Photo

All connections should be made with the sincere purpose of building friendships and establishing trust.

Thibault Jacquemart

Thibault has learned many things through his entrepreneurial experience and offers a few pieces of advice. He suggests finding a problem to solve and then designing the solution, thinking for the long-term. Make sure to have a partner, or partners, with a knowledge in the field and with whom you are well aligned, understanding that the relationship between founders becomes very important over time. Ideally, the partners have the skills to cover the product design, product development, and the sales, marketing, and financing. Once you have a good product and processes, negotiate decent conditions on your first investment and don’t give away equity in your company too early on. Don’t outsource work because you can’t ensure quality. And, while your project can become consuming, being too close to the product can be dangerous if it blurs your vision for the company.

Thibault leaves a few final thoughts for the current UBI students. First, they should learn about things that are going on in the world now, and about things that will be happening in the next few years. This will give them ideas for the future, whether it be for further education or for their professional life. Although Thibault doesn’t feel he excels at personal branding, he recognizes how important it is to get out there and develop your network. Later on, your network allows you to get your product in front of the people who want it. He can’t stress enough the importance of getting to know their teachers because their teachers are the beginning of their professional network. Often, people want to help, so they should keep in contact with people because they might need them to introduce them to the right people. All connections should be made with the sincere purpose of building friendships and establishing trust because warm connections are so valuable. Students should start now to develop their network.

In the late 1990s, when Yalçin was looking to pursue an Executive MBA degree, UBI Business School offered the only programme in Brussels that was delivered in English. Yalçin was an industrial engineer at the time and wanted to improve his skills in sales, marketing, finance, and leadership in order to advance his career. He joined UBI’s MBA programme because it had a structure that matched his expectations and a timetable that fit his schedule.

During his time at UBI, Yalçin had the opportunity to work closely with people from many different nationalities, many different cultures, and many different academic and professional backgrounds. This learning experience helped him to better understand the importance of diversity. After a long and stressful day at work, Yalçin and his classmates looked forward to their classes at UBI. Gone was the stress and the fatigue of the day, and in its place was collaboration, learning, and fun. The professors, along with the administration, made the group feel like one big family.

Yalçin needed both the hard and soft skills that he learned at UBI to progress in his career. Upon finishing his MBA in 1998, he moved to a position as a Managing Director of EMEA in a new organisation. The timing couldn’t have been better and he was able to use his newly acquired skills to excel at work. A few years later he joined a startup in the mining business which also proved to be a good career move. In 2010, he noticed the booming solar energy industry in Belgium and immediately got into solar energy so he didn’t miss that opportunity. When the solar energy market became saturated after three years or so, he decided to target a more stable market, one with an expected consistent growth.

During his years of entrepreneurial experience, Yalçin never shied away from the opportunity, or the necessity, of pivoting in his career and taking on new business ventures. For example, following the saturation of the solar energy market, he conducted a multi-industry analysis of the greater Brussels region and concluded that the rising demand in housing along with the need for renovation in old buildings was driving a stable market in the construction and building materials industry. He decided to pursue this market, and it was convenient that he had a friend in the business. They teamed up and immediately set to work, selecting products, looking for reliable sources, and checking their capability, capacity and quality assurance system to be sure that the supplier could deliver consistent quality on time. His responsibilities kept him busy, travelling to China several times a year, negotiating with suppliers, negotiating with potential buyers, coordinating all logistics, and promoting the products to retailers, construction companies, and architects. Yet again, his ability to find a need in the market and fill it meant he continued to thrive in this new chapter in his career.

UBI students are future leaders and I hope to impart leadership and critical thinking skills to help them be a better person, a good corporate citizen , and to make this world a better place.”

Yalçin Sahankaya

Over the years, Yalçin kept in contact with fellow UBI alumni and attended UBI events. About seven years ago, he was invited by the former dean to give a lecture at UBI. It turned out to be a great experience and he loved the feeling of sharing his knowledge and expertise with others. He has since taught the classes of Introduction to Sustainable Business, Entrepreneurship and Startups, and Sustainable Operations Management at UBI which always requires a lot of preparation on his part, but which has also brought a lot of personal satisfaction. As he considers our students to be future leaders, he tries to impart critical thinking and leadership skills. Change is the only constant in life, which is why he feels lifelong learning is so important.
